For most hikes a moderate pre-trip workout plan is more than enough. The goals of beginning a fitness program early are increased aerobic capacity (and increased enjoyment on trail) and a reduction in the chances of an injury. Remember, the goal is to enhance your experience, not feel like you just went through boot camp!
